Resident Evil in my and many other people’s opinion is the pinnacle of survival horror games. It wasn’t the first but it was the best. It perfected the genre and took it to its limits. Resident Evil 1 still stands in my top ten favourite all time games ever. This release of Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles basically was nostalgia for me and many other RE fans. But can it stand as a half decent light gun game?

For people buying it and expecting it to be another addition to the series you’ll be disappointed. RE:UC is a spin off knotting together all the plots and filling the plot holes in. To make the stories all flow together. This is Resident evil 0,1 and 3. The formula is like any other light gun game. Aim the cursor around the screen and shoot the enemies before they hurt you. Easy, eh? No, not really. The game is a very good game but they’re some faults in it that can’t be ignored.

I’ll start off with the bad comments. The game itself has a reasonably good difficulty curb but after you’ve fought your way through crowds of zombies, hunters and other inhumane creatures and barely surviving it’s rather downgrading to be killed by a bat and having to be warped back to the last check-point which is usually a good 10 - 15 minutes back. The script is something else, terrible voice acting and an “Oh my god well done Sherlock” sort of script. An example of this is “What are these creatures” says Jill after staring a zombie straight into the eye. Also the game suffers from being really not scary and messing up all the scary bits in the series. Yes they have messed up the dog + window = new pants scene as well. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen them time and time again but they had a chance to make it scary and they didn’t take it which is down hearting.

But now with the good stuff. The game looks gorgeous I mean really nice, probably the nicest looking game on the Wii. The water shimmers and the zombies looking terrific. Everything about it feels well polished and spit shined till a glimmer. The enemy design is brilliantly thought out from huge snakes to a huge worm leech hybrid. Some enemies are abnormally strong and take bloody loads of bullets to take down. The enemy AI is also worth a mention. The zombies attack in groups and don’t attack you one at a time so you’ve got to fend off more than one and fights can get frantic quickly.

The boss battles are also great. The Tyrant is worth a note because how bloody hard he is to beat but you never stop coming back for more. The game bleeds nostalgia. If you’ve played any of the RE games and you’re replaying them in UC you’ll be like “Oh yeah I remember this” which is also a reason why the game isn’t scary. The music is good but not ground breaking. You won’t remember the tunes but they suit well with this game. They’re a lot of quick time reactions with this game but the work and feel well. Like if a zombie decides they want a Jill sand which and they’re latching onto you. A Wii mote will pop up and screen and tell you to waggle it around to counter attack it. For a light gun the game has a lot of depth. Letting you customise weapons to your choice and style. Let’s say you’re a big fan of the shotgun and you want to make it one of your more primary weapons you use the stars that you get after every mission and use them to upgrade your gun.  The game can be a bit scarce for ammo. So some of the time you’ll be sticking with the pistol which has infinite ammo.

The game itself has a lot of replay value. You’ll want to go through a level again and beat your score so you can upgrade your weapons. From what I hear playing this game with the Wii Zapper is a bit awkward. But I stuck to the Wii mote and Nunchuk and found it really fluid and easy to control, more so than Ghost Squad. The game itself has a decent multiplayer so it’s good for a 30 minute blast with your mates but nothing you’ll stay up all night playing. As you progress through out the game the areas you have to shoot in become bigger and ergo you end up having loads of zombies on screen. At one point I had at least 6 maybe 7 zombies on screen at once. It can end up getting very frantic, very quickly. The game itself is about 20 hours long.

Final Verdict
So overall it’s a brilliant, well polished and highly challenging game, but let down by weak amounts of ammo, huge checkpoint gaps and some unfair boss scenes. Worth a purchase, mainly because it’s very long for a light gun game and bleeds nostalgia.
