The new Nintendo Gamer has launched, and as such i think it’s time to look back on our top five favourite games of all time.
First up we have Peter, creator and owner of Nintendo Gamer.
Battlefield 2:
If I’d never played this game I’d imagine Counter Strike Source would be here instead, but as this was my first experience of a squad-based FPS game it had to make the list as I’ve probably played more of this game in the last three years than the rest of the games on this list put together.
Here you are presented with huge maps capable of holding 64 players (assuming the server allows it), different classes and a large array of vehicles consisting of jeeps, hummers, helicopters, tanks, APCs and jets to inflict doom onto your enemy. What’s not to like?
Goldeneye 007:
It may be a case of rose-tinted spectacles but this is still my personal favourite FPS of all time since it was the first FPS I’d ever played where you had to think about the consequences of my actions, if I made a lot of noise I got overrun by the enemy, if I failed an objective it was game over.
It’s been bettered by other games since but if it weren’t for this game we wouldn’t have many of the great FPS’s we have today *coughs*Call of Duty 4*coughs*Halo*coughs*.
Team Fortress 2:
This is in my opinion one of the finest first person shoot ‘em ups to be put out in the past few years. The game has an excellent blend of cartoon violence, a superb-selection of scenarios and a large variety of different class-based characters and frequent new free downloadable content that has ensured that I haven’t been bored with this title once in the past eight months!
F-Zero GX:
I remember being a bit sceptical about this game when it was confirmed, this was mainly due to it being the first F-Zero game to not be developed by Nintendo. Fortunately my fears were unfounded as Sega produced the perfect future racer with a blend of exceptionally high-speed action and fantastic graphics.
Super Mario World:
I didn’t get a Snes until 1996 so I went for a good 4-5 years believing Super Mario Bros 3 was the definitive platformer. Super Mario World does everything SMB3 did and made it better. The worlds are colourful, likable and most importantly didn’t feel repetitive, which made this game a joy to play. It still holds up very well to modern platformers. It might explain why Nintendo have a re-released it a good thousand times!
Good selection there from Peter, but we have no time to stop. Up next is Ben, graphics designer for the site. Lets see what he’s chosen as his top five.
F ZeroX:
It’s an awesome game put simply. Plus its only one of a select few games that I’ve actually completed fully. The track design is great, the music is awesome, OK some of the crafts are neither here nor there but the characters are all interesting with well thought out backgrounds. I remember reading all of the bio’s during the run up to the games launch. Then there’s the replayability the GP’s them selves are entertaining enough but then there’s the wonderful X Cup with it’s random track generator, the fantastically tense Death Race (still can’t get my time under a minute!) and of course the brilliant multiplayer mode was always exciting!
Super Smash Bros Melee:
Any game that gets you playing from the moment you walk through the front door till it gets dark has got to be a good game. SSB:M is one of those games. Decent AI, loads of extras, challenging erm… challenges, 100-man melee, home run contest, so many options so little time. Quality.
Half Life 2 (Including Episodes 1+2):
Great story, fantastic graphics, an epic sense of presence within the environment(s). A great mind set from the developers in relation to Steam and their ethos for getting the right game to the public, including making the game look fantastic on a scarily wide range of system spec. Valve did an amazing job with this game.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past:
“May the way of the hero lead to the triforce” so much tension, so much expectation, so much stress! Yet oh so much enjoyment! Some truly great characters (including that woman who calls for the guards!) the happy shop man who bangs his drum! Hell even the robbers are fun! Not to mention that for a SNES game it looks super slick!
Tetris:
One word, Classic. Addictive gameplay, slow and steady progress, its a game that rewards dedication. Its just a shame that the following games have drifted from the purity of the original with pointless added features. Plus who didn’t love seeing that rocket take off!
A number of classic games in there from Ben. All right it’s time for a rest stop....Thats enough, back to it!
Next up is Colm, dedicated writer of the site!
Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
This game was way ahead of it’s time, and anyone that’s played it should be able to clearly remember walking onto Hyrule Field for the very first time. It was a instant classic and for it’s time, was the best ever made.
Halo:
It’s one of those games that you can’t really hate (well some people do). Anyone who has played the game can remember just how fantastic it was, and although I hate Halo 3, I love this instalment.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion:
This game took my social life and threw it in a bin. Oblivion is such a vast and epic game with so much to do that it’s unbelievable. Buy this, and say goodbye to your life, that’s it in a nutshell.
Ace Attorney series:
Probably the greatest series known to man, well, to those who have played them. The courtroom drama is one of my favourite games with a humorous and stunning plot that will have you coming back for more. The games may be short but they just ooze so much character that has to be experienced.
Half-Life 2:
Armed with fantastic graphics and physics engine, Half Life 2 showed where everyone else was going wrong. The game was addictive and had some of the toughest puzzles I’ve ever had to face in my life. In my opinion, this game is the best ever made.
Michael is our next one up to the stage with his top five.
Final Fantasy IX:
One of the first games I ever played, and what a game. The visuals, the gameplay, the story, the depth, the longetivity, the bosses and the characters were all perfect. My favourite game ever.
Super Mario World:
The best Mario game created. It took what made the first 3 amazing, added a Yoshi and made the visuals so much better. What’s not to like?
The Sims 2:
The countless times I have lost sleep creating Sims, making the perfect house for them, raising a family and just generally messing around I don’t know. It just has that charm that keeps you wanting to play on and on.
Resident Evil 4:
Amazing in every meaning of the word. The gameplay was flawless, the atmosphere was great and the story was fantastic.
God of War:
Violence can be funny, when you have two awesome blades chained to you. The game is practically flawless in every sense.
Four down, that means there’s one left. If your wondering who that is then who do you think is typing this, Father Christmas?
My top five:
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
My first dive into the Zelda universe, and it was amazing. With a generally excellent storyline and an adventure that left you breathless at times, (who really expected Link to turn into an adult?) it was an amazing experience from start to end. Probably my favourite game ever.
Resident Evil 4:
One of my greatest experiences ever. Anyone who hasn’t been chased by a regenerator hasn’t lived! An excellent control method with excellent guns and excellent overall gameplay, this is a game that is excellent all over.
The Elder scrolls IV: Oblivion:
The fact that you can do whatever you want in a medieval setting is just brilliant. This is GTA set in medieval times and let me tell you, it’s much better. The plot helps the game but it not necessary, you can always find something to do in Cyrodiil.
Banjo Kazooie/Tooie:
A game filled with humour, great gameplay and a bear with a bird on his back. It has to be Banjo and Kazooie. It was a worthy competitor to Mario, and in my eyes beat the plumber right out.
The Harvest Moon series: (they’re all the same really)
The most peaceful game ever. With no shooting, stomping on peoples heads or rabid dogs to stray from the peace. A simple farming sim that lets you sit back and relax is an amazing game at that.
So, that’s our top five, took a while to get there didn’t it? Ah well it was worth it, I’m sure. If you would like to send in your top five, then E-mail me at and I’ll try to get it into a future editorial!
